We live in a world where we’re still speculating about who the next James Bond (Agent 007) might be. While we may not know who the next agent is, we’re increasingly confident about what the next generation of applications will look like: agentic applications.

A couple of years ago, everything revolved around building Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) applications. Today, with rapid advancements in large language models and tooling, almost every company is talking about agents—or as some like to say, that agent life.

In a recent discussion, the Y Combinator team predicted that there will eventually be an agent for almost every SaaS application. That’s a bold claim—but if you’ve been watching how software is evolving, it doesn’t sound that far-fetched.

It’s been a while since I last published a blog post—and that’s something I want to correct.

I’m starting a new series called “The Agentic Advantage”, where I’ll explore:

  • Core agent concepts
  • Agentic design patterns
  • Practical proofs of concept (POCs)
  • Lessons learned moving from demos to production

Before we start building agents, it’s important to clearly understand what an agent is not.


What Is Not an AI Agent

Any system that performs a task once, end-to-end, in a single pass is not an agent.

For example:

PROMPT = """
Write me an essay of 100 words about different types of coffee beans.
"""

This is a one-shot prompt. The system receives an instruction, generates an output, and stops. There is:

  • No planning
  • No iteration
  • No reflection
  • No autonomy

This is useful—but it’s not agentic.


So, What Is an AI Agent?

An AI agent is autonomous. It can:

  • Break down a high-level objective into smaller tasks
  • Decide how to execute those tasks
  • Use tools or APIs when needed
  • Reflect on outcomes and improve its results

In simpler terms:

Agents don’t just respond — they decide, act, and adapt.

Unlike a traditional RAG application that responds directly to a user query, an agent:

  • Understands context
  • Plans a course of action
  • Executes within defined boundaries
  • Iterates until it reaches the goal

A fully independent agent can:

  • Determine the steps needed
  • Identify and use tools
  • Iterate without continuous human intervention

Over the past two years, I’ve been working on AI applications 🤖, guiding organizations to build AI governance frameworks, responsible AI policies, and deploying production-ready systems.

The AI landscape changes daily ⚡, making it difficult to lock down a future-proof architecture. A good starting point is defining:

  • 🎯 The objective of the AI application
  • 🖥️ The platform on which it will be built

These early decisions shape the system design and architecture.

For this discussion, let’s use an example: a domain-specific chatbot 💬 that uses customer data and a foundational model to generate responses. To make it more complex, we’ll add tool calling 🛠️ and agents 🕹️ for real-time, domain-specific functions.

Let’s say your enterprise is deploying a RAG chatbot for internal use. It pulls answers from internal documentation and returns concise responses using an LLM like OpenAI’s GPT or Anthropic’s Claude.

Your goals are:

  • Boost productivity by reducing time spent searching documents
  • Ensure responses are accurate, consistent, and traceable
  • Protect sensitive data from being leaked or mishandled
  • Maintain compliance with internal risk, privacy, and legal policies

This is where governance becomes critical.

🎮 Introduction: Why I Chose This Game

For the AWS Build Games with Amazon Q CLI Challenge, I wanted to create a game that was not only fun to build — but meaningful in purpose. With AI as my co-creator, I set out to design something that combined entertainment with educational value. That’s how "Finding Tilly" was born.

It's a kid-friendly adventure game that helps young children build foundational skills like alphabet recognition, number sequencing, and basic addition — all wrapped in a visually engaging, story-driven experience.

💡 Why This Concept?

I chose this idea for several key reasons:

  • 🎯 It addresses a real need: making learning genuinely fun for kids
  • 🧠 It has a simple, engaging premise that’s easy for young minds to follow
  • 📚 It naturally integrates multiple layers of educational content
  • 👀 Its visual design makes it accessible even to pre-readers
  • 🌱 It's modular and scalable — the game evolves as the child grows

Thanks to Amazon Q CLI, building this experience was fast, flexible, and AI-assisted from start to finish. It allowed me to focus on creativity while automating much of the setup and development process.

"Finding Tilly" is more than just a submission — it’s a small step toward using AI to inspire learning through play.
